Utagawa Hiroshige, The Moon Pine at Ueno, no. 89 in the series One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo, 1857
Color woodcut, 13 3/8 x 8 7/8 in. (34 x 22.5 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, 1963.30.5145
In 19th-century Edo, trees with unusual shapes were often given special names. This one is known also as the Loop Pine. The reference to the moon in the print's title refers not only to the round shape, but also to the other phases of the moon that could be viewed through the branch on different evenings from different angles. Hiroshige employs the ocular shape to focus on a row of houses lining the southern approach to Benten Shrine (the main sanctuary is just visible in the lower right, recognizable by its red color).
