Utagawa Hiroshige and Utagawa Kunisada, The Plum Orchard, from the series Elegant Prince Genji (Furyu Genji), 1853
Color woodblock print with traces of mica (triptych), 14 7/16 × 29 3/4 in. (36.6 × 75.6 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Katherine Ball Collection, 41.42.22a–c
This print demonstrates the critical component of collaboration in Japanese printmaking. Throughout the 1850s, Kunisada and Hiroshige regularly worked together, capitalizing on their respective strengths; for Kunisada, the figure, and for Hiroshige, background and landscapes. They worked together on a series of ten triptychs based on Elegant Prince Genji, looking to Kunisada's earlier designs, which also had illustrated the popular serial novel. Here, in the private garden of a restaurant, an elegantly dressed Prince Genji beckons a geisha to come closer.
