Robert Frederick Blum, Venetian Gondoliers, ca. 1880–1889. Oil on canvas, 18 1/2 × 28 5/8 in. (47 ×72.7 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
Robert Blum first visited Venice in 1880, and he reveled in the city’s sparkling waters, gleaming light, and international community of artists. His Venetian paintings, drawings, and prints were praised by the contemporary critic Royal Cortissoz, who proclaimed, “No painter of Venice has surpassed Blum in the fragility of his impressions, in their delicacy of fiber, in their ravishing precision.”
While working in Venice, Blum was among a group of American artists who befriended James McNeill Whistler, who called on them at their quarters on the Riva San Biagio. Whistler especially savored the views from Blum’s room, which gave Blum the opportunity to observe his etching and pastel techniques. Whistler had an immediate and lasting impact on Blum’s style, as evidenced by the tonal harmonies of Venetian Gondoliers.
