About the Artwork

John George Brown, The Lost Child, 1881. Oil on canvas, 29 × 44 in. (73.7 × 111.8 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher

In the decades following the Civil War (1861–1865), John George Brown became one of the most popular and commercially successful artists in the United States. Like the author Horatio Alger, who authored sentimental “rags to riches” stories of urban newsboys and shoeshine boys, Brown was particularly drawn to working-class children he met on the streets of New York City.

The Lost Child belongs to a series of paintings depicting working children adhering to their own unwritten social codes. A group of boys gather around a girl who has strayed from her parent or guardian. Tears roll down her cheeks while each boy appraises her with various expressions of pity and concern. Although they likely spend their days navigating New York City without adult supervision, they still respond empathetically to the girl’s despair at finding herself suddenly lost in Central Park.
