Edward Henry Potthast, Summer Days, ca. 1915. Oil on canvas, 20 × 24 in. (50.7 × 61 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
Edward Henry Potthast frequently found his subjects on the beaches of New York City, mostly around Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Far Rockaway. In these destinations, Potthast found scenes of bustling middle-class crowds enjoying seaside holidays.
The primary protagonists of Summer Days are a mother or guardian accompanied by three children gathered in the shade cast by an adjacent building or boardwalk. Broken brushwork enlivens both the sand and the colored shadows, unifying the various figures spread across the canvas. The cropping of a figure at the far right suggests the compositional influence of candid photography and infuses the scene with informality.
