George Benjamin Luks, Woman with Parrot, ca. 1896–1900. Oil on canvas, 26 × 24 in. (66 × 61 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
Throughout the course of his career, George Benjamin Luks remained steadfast in his frank and forthright vision of humanity. He explained his artistic philosophy: “Every line you put in a sketch has got to show how a man feels . . . drawing people different from all other people, each person himself.”
Woman with Parrot depicts a young woman seated in a darkened room with decorative objects. Her gaze is turned toward a brilliant green parrot who stands at her feet. Though Luks had a reputation for being rebellious, contrarian, and pugilistic, he was exceptionally sensitive to animals—particularly birds, a sentiment confirmed by the existence of a large number of undated rough sketches, many of which feature parrots.
