Willard Leroy Metcalf, First Green, 1905. Oil on canvas, 26 × 29 in. (66.2 × 73.8 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
Willard Leroy Metcalf found an opportunity to engage with color and changing light in the New England landscape. His devotion to the beauty he found in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut came from his belief that an artist could work better at home than abroad with a focus on atmosphere, the quality of light, and the characteristic conditions of each season.
First Green belongs to the series of landscapes that depict the seasons in Connecticut. With its low rolling green hills sprinkled with golden grasses, this composition features wide-open spaces, yet it sustains a sense of physical intimacy. As one critic wrote, Metcalf’s landscapes extend “an eye towards inviting the viewer within, rather than imparting a feeling of awe.”
