George Bellows, Blue and Gold, 1913. Oil on panel, 15 × 19 1/2 in. (38 × 49.4 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
In 1911, George Bellows made his first trip to Monhegan Island off the coast of Maine. He was inspired by the island’s natural environment and returned in 1913. That summer turned out to be one of the most fruitful periods of his career: between July and October, he produced more than one hundred paintings, often working outdoors.
This painting belongs to a group of seascapes that, with their bravura brushwork and lively palette, evoke the untamable forces of the Atlantic Ocean. Using thickly loaded brushes, Bellows shaped cliffs and rocks by physically building up paint on the canvas. Broad strokes create the effect of crashing waves, affirming his contemporary reputation as a “painter of the vigorous, [and] the physically dramatic.”
