Georgia O’Keeffe’s interest in the natural world, coupled with her attraction to sensual experiences, manifested in a series of still lifes created between 1920 and 1924. Alfred Stieglitz’s family estate at Lake George, in New York’s Adirondack Mountains region, was a regular summer retreat from 1918 to 1934. There, she encountered vegetable gardens and abundant orchards. Still-life subjects were all around her, literally ripe for picking.
Three Pears attests to O’Keeffe’s skill for rendering inanimate objects and infusing them with an organic vibrancy. Like many of her still lifes, the composition depicts the pears not only as physical objects but also as emotional surrogates, making these souvenirs from nature uniquely her own.
