Edward Henry Potthast, Beach at Rockaway, ca. 1910–1920. Oil on canvas board, 8 × 10 in. (20.3 × 25.4 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
Although Edward Henry Potthast had painted some earlier beach scenes, after a trip to Gloucester, Massachusetts, in the summer of 1903, he increasingly focused on the subject that came to define his career. The beach became his “singular obsession” by 1914, when he exhibited significant numbers of these paintings in New York City and Washington, DC. He remained prolific to the end of his career, producing a multitude of paintings of people enjoying the sun, sand, and shore.
Beach at Rockaway feels like a rapid plein-air study: expressive and slightly abstracted, it offers the overall impression of a day at the beach. The viewer is placed at a distance from the activities on the shore, thus suggesting the position of a faraway observer.
