About the Artwork

Thomas Moran, Sunset Santa Maria and the Ducal Palace, Venice, 1902. Oil on canvas, 20 1/4 × 30 in. (51.4 × 76.2 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher

After first visiting Venice in 1886, Thomas Moran wrote, “Venice is all, and more, than travelers have reported of it. It is wonderful. I shall make no attempt at description.” Instead, he committed himself to painting Venetian scenes in a sparkling style that echoed British painter J.M.W. Turner’s earlier views of the city’s elegant architecture and shimmering lagoons.

This composition demonstrates Moran’s lyrical approach to the city’s distinctive topography. The water is depicted in turquoise hues, and the church of Santa Maria della Salute and the Palazzo Ducale are rendered in hues of coral, gold, and ivory with glistening effects that reveal Moran’s ability to deftly reflect the varied expressions of light and shadow on architectural details.
