Katsushika Hokusai, Under the Wave off Kanagawa (The Great Wave), from the series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, ca. 1830–1832
Color woodblock print, 9 13/16 × 14 1/2 in. (25 × 36.9 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Museum purchase, Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts Endowment Fund, 1969.32.6.
Perhaps the single most iconic image of the ukiyo-e period, this print shows the sacred mountain--Mount Fuji, in the distance, across the trough of a great wave. The precarious intermingling of boats and crashing waves in the foreground has led some to interpret the composition as bringing together three primary elements of lived experience: the human, the terrestrial, and the divine.
Karin Breuer, Japanesque (2010).
