Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Snowy Morning, from the series Among Snow, Moon and Flowers, ca. 1847-1848
Color woodcut, 14 9/16 x 9 7/8 in. (37 x 25.1 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, 1963.30.5504
The extravagant black kimono is the most impressive feature of this print, which is essentially a fashion plate. The elegant fabrics of a woman's outer kimono, obi, and under-kimono were frequently shown in Japanese prints as combinations of stripes, checks, plaids, florals, and allover repetitive patterns.
