About the Artwork

E. Charlton Fortune, Summer Night, 1920
Oil on canvas, 45 x 50 in. (114.3 x 127 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Partial gift of Glenn L. and Jane Fortune Hickerson, 2003.165

Loosely painted in an Impressionist style, this enigmatic scene featuring three women on a moonlit summer stroll captures the exquisite beauty of California’s rugged Central Coast. The composition includes a view of the Greene & Greene-designed D. L. James House located in Carmel Highlands. Euphemia Fortune, who omitted her first name from her signature to conceal her gender, exhibited this canvas at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, a world’s fair held in 1915 in San Francisco’s Marina District.
