George Bellows, In Virginia, 1908. Oil on canvas, 30 × 38 in. (76.2 × 96.5 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
In the summer of 1908, George Bellows accepted an offer to teach for six weeks at the Virginia Summer School of Art, held on the campus of the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville. The summer proved challenging, as he was heartsick and found it difficult to paint in the sultry and oppressive Southern heat.
In Virginia depicts a humid summer afternoon on the verdant UVA campus. Figures stroll amid the trees and a couple appears to flirt across a low stone wall—effects that recall Jean-Antoine Watteau’s fêtes galantes of the early eighteenth century. The university was not fully coeducational until 1970, so this scene may portray the campus during a dance weekend, when women from area schools were invited to socialize with UVA students.
