About the Artwork

Robert Henri, "O" in Persian Costume, 1913 [possibly reworked in 1921]. Oil on canvas, 77 × 36 7/8 in. (195.6 × 93.7 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher

Robert Henri adored dance performances and admired modern dancers such as Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis. He appreciated the independent spirit of these innovative performers, whom he depicted in several major portraits. He also took a particular interest in the ensembles they wore, as evidenced by the many pages in his scrapbooks featuring photos of dancers.

In this portrait, Henri’s wife, Marjorie Organ, whom he affectionately called “O,” wears a costume that was almost certainly derived from his passion for modern dance. Although inspired by global dance traditions, contemporary performers often appropriated Eastern cultures to promote Orientalist fantasies for Western audiences. Organ’s costume resembles elements of the one worn by St. Denis for her famous dance The Cobras, which she performed internationally for many years.
