John George Brown, Captain Stanley with His Two Sons Cleaning their Catch of Cod; on the beach of Grand Manan Island, Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, 1877. Oil on canvas, 24 1/2 × 19 1/2 in. (62.2 × 49.5 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
John George Brown twice traveled to remote Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick, Canada, nine miles from the far northern coastline of Maine. There he sought inspiration in the local fishing community and the dramatic scenery and hard work that framed their daily lives.
A number of Brown’s Grand Manan pictures feature Captain Stanley, known affectionately as “Old Stanley” throughout the island community. Here, Stanley and his sons clean the day’s catch. Great care has been paid to the depiction of the fish, their bodies laid across the table as if placed upon an altar. Rowboats are visible at the far edges of the composition, alluding to the day’s fishing expedition.
