Charles Sheeler was a singular force in American art. Often associated with a loosely affiliated group of modernist artists known as the Precisionists, he was a practitioner of both painting and photography who explored and expanded the profound visual relationships between these two media.
Sometime in the mid-1940s, Sheeler traveled to West Virginia to visit and photograph a synthetic-rubber plant. He later completed four paintings based on these photographs. Cat-walk, the last work in this series, maps the plant’s shadows, its lattice of walkways, and the imposing forms of the colossal cylinders—forms he simplified to the point of abstraction, creating a fantasy of a pristine industrial environment.
