Robert Henri, Ricardo, San Ildefonso, 1916. Oil on canvas, 24 × 19 in. (61 × 48.3 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
Robert Henri worked in the artists’ colony of Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a few months in 1916, painting in a studio in the historic Palace of the Governors. Henri was incredibly productive during this period, painting more than one hundred recorded works.
Ricardo, San Ildefonso depicts a young boy from the nearby San Ildefonso Pueblo, believed to be Richard Martinez (1904–1987), who later became a well-known artist, recognized for his achievements in painting and pottery. Henri’s portraits aim to honor their subjects, and in his influential book The Art Spirit (1923), he declared, “All art that is worthwhile is a record of intense life.” He particularly urged his students to “[f]eel the dignity of a child. Do not feel superior . . . for you are not.”
