Thomas Moran, Grand Canyon of Arizona, ca. 1873. Oil on canvas, 10 × 14 5/8 in. (25.6 × 37.1 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
Thomas Moran first visited the Grand Canyon in 1873 as a member of John Wesley Powell’s expedition through the canyon lands of southern Utah and northern Arizona. Moran was struck by his first view of the steep inner gorge of the Grand Canyon, declaring it “the most awfully grand and impressive scene” he had ever beheld.
Captivated by the splendor of the red sandstone, miles of gorges, and innumerable caverns, Moran made at least a dozen trips to the Grand Canyon over the course of his career. This work depicts the canyon in gemstone colors: amber, amethyst, and sapphire. Although unfinished, this oil sketch captures the immediacy of a first encounter with this sublime spectacle.
