About the Artwork

Thomas Hovenden, Portrait of Samuel Jones, ca. 1882. Oil on canvas, 9 7/8 × 8 in. (25 × 20.5 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher

Thomas Hovenden married fellow artist Helen Corson, a member of a noted Quaker family whose century-old homestead in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, had been a historic center of antislavery activity. Hovenden later built his studio in the property’s Abolition Hall and became immersed in daily life in the community, sympathetically painting African American neighbors who served as his models.

Hovenden frequently painted his neighbor and friend Samuel Jones, who was in his early seventies when they met; he served as one of the artist’s favorite models, posing for at least six of Hovenden’s genre paintings. This painting is a rare example of Hoveneden’s work in pure portraiture, showing Jones at ease, smiling with warmth and self-assuredness.
