John Singer Sargent, Stringing Onions, 1878. Oil on canvas, 17 × 13 1/8 in. (43.2 × 33.2 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
In 1878, John Singer Sargent traveled to Capri in search of artistic inspiration, which came almost immediately. Word of his arrival spread quickly, and the English artist Frank Hyde invited him to share his sizable studio and welcomed him into the island’s small artistic community. Hyde also introduced Sargent to Rosina Ferrara, a popular local artist’s model who was renowned for her professionalism and charm.
Stringing Onions depicts a young woman and a girl in traditional Caprese dress in a bare, sunlit interior. They braid strands of onions, which would later be hung to preserve the vegetables throughout the winter. The young woman standing near the window appears to be Ferrara, her dark complexion, wavy hair, and pink dress echoing Sargent’s other depictions of her.
