About the Artwork

Richard Emil Miller, Portrait of a Young Girl by a Red-Lacquered Stand (Princess in the Land of Sunshine), ca. 1916–1917. Oil on canvas, 36 1/8 × 34 1/8 in. (91.8 × 86.7 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher

Richard E. Miller spent time in the French village of Giverny, working alongside other Impressionist artists. He later joined the teaching staff of the Stickney Memorial School of Fine Arts in Pasadena, California. During this period, he worked in a borrowed studio on the estate of Eva Scott Fényes, a wealthy student whose home was filled with aesthetic objects that appealed to the painter’s eye.

Fényes’ estate provides the setting for this portrait, which is replete with cultural references. The model wears a golden Chinese robe, her hair accented by a Spanish comb, and she holds a Japanese fan and a mirror. Although mirrors held by women in paintings often symbolize vanity and the fleeting nature of beauty, any possible symbolism is subsumed by the sheer sumptuousness of Miller’s composition.
