About the Artwork

Georgia O’Keeffe, The Patio – No. 1, 1940. Oil on canvas, 24 1/8 × 19 1/8 in. (61.2 × 48.7 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher. © Georgia O’Keeffe Museum

In August 1934, Georgia O’Keeffe made her first visit to Ghost Ranch, an hour north of Santa Fe. The ranch made an immediate impression on O’Keeffe, who had dreamt of living in the New Mexico desert. In 1940, she purchased a house there—it was the first property she had ever owned. She excitedly wrote to her husband, Alfred Stieglitz, “I have bought this house . . . It is a way for me to live very comfortably at the tail end of the earth.”

This is the first in a series of views O’Keeffe painted of the house and courtyard. The whitewashed adobe wall is framed by two parallel bands of color, representing a dazzling blue New Mexico sky above and the wild green sagebrush and chamiso below.
