About the Artwork

Utagawa Hiroshige, Kinryuzan Temple in Asakusa, no. 99 in the series One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo, 1856
Color woodcut, 13 3/8 x 8 13/16 in. (34 x 22.4 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Gift of Miss Carlotta Mabury, 54755.764

Visitors to the grounds of the oldest Buddhist temple in Edo passed through the Thunder Gate or Kaminarimon, cropped in this composition so that it is only a framing device on the left of the print. Overhead, a red paper lantern with the character hashi refers to the temple's financial benefactors. The unique cropping and unusual viewpoints of Hiroshige's designs for this series offer an alternative to the Western tradition of perspective in providing an illusion of depth and recession through space.
