About the Artwork

Katsushika Hokusai, The Amida Waterfall in the Depths of the Kiso Mountains, from the series A Tour of Waterfalls in the Provinces, 1832-1835
Color woodcut, 14 5/8 x 9 15/16 in. (37.2 x 25.2 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Museum Collection, 1964.141.789

Most likely Hokusai relied upon travelers' accounts and secondhand descriptions for this composition of the remote Amida waterfall, but the ocular source from which the downward cascade of water surges is actually a plausible interpretation of written reports. Hokusai's cropped viewpoint leaves the viewer to imagine the immensity and power of the waterfall as it drops to the inevitable pool below. Dwarfed by nature's awesome stature, the artist's figures have chosen for their picnic a precarious position on a cliff jutting over the falls.
