About the Artwork

Frank Duveneck, Study for "Guard of the Harem", 1879
Oil on canvas, 30 x 26 in. (76.2 x 66 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Museum purchase, gift of Peter McBean, 1990.11.dup1

Influenced by the dynamic works of seventeenth-century Dutch artists such as Frans Hals, Frank Duveneck painted contemporary subjects using fluid brushwork and strong tonal values. The seemingly unfinished quality of this work contrasts with the more polished style of realism promoted in many art schools. This painting depicts the guard of a harem, a secluded, women-only space in some Muslim cultures, which became a popular artistic subject. Duveneck’s depiction of his Black model was a study painted from life, and although it is not clear whether his clothing is authentic or a studio prop, the representation of his likeness is empathetic.
