About the Artwork

Emil Carlsen, Summer, Windham, Connecticut, ca. 1904. Oil on canvas, 30 × 25 in. (76.2 × 63.5 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher

Emil Carlsen’s art was invigorated by his admiration of French Impressionist landscapes. In response, he lightened his palette and went to the countryside to paint outdoors. After 1900, following years spent working in Paris, San Francisco, and New York, Emil Carlsen worked in Connecticut, often painting with his close friend, the American Impressionist Julian Alden Weir (1852–1919).

Carlsen and his family spent two or three idyllic summers on Weir’s Windham estate, and he painted this landscape there. A grand sycamore towers above a low horizon and two small figures, who may be Weir (who enjoyed gardening) and his second wife, Ella Baker Weir. The painting’s peaceful feeling supports a contemporary description of Carlsen: “He is not so much the painter of trees and skies as he is of the moods these natural objects inspire in his soul.”
