William Merritt Chase, Spanish Bric-à-Brac Shop, 1883. Oil on canvas, 48 3/8 × 29 1/2 in. (123 × 75 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
William Merritt Chase long dreamed of establishing “the finest studio in New York.” During his travels abroad, he collected art, furniture, fabrics, and antiques with this grand studio in mind. On a visit to Spain in 1882, he collected such a vast number of antiques that he aroused suspicion from US customs officials, who detained him for several hours upon his return to New York.
Spanish Bric-à-Brac Shop depicts one of the likely sources for Chase’s collection. Its rich description of the textures, colors, and visual effects of antique objects documents not only Chase’s fondness for beautiful things, but also his desire to possess them.
