John Singer Sargent, Bedouin Chief, ca. 1905–1906. Oil on canvas, 28 1/8 × 22 1/8 in. (71.5 × 56.1 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Promised gift of Bernard and Barbro Osher
In 1890, John Singer Sargent began planning Triumph of Religion, an ambitious mural project for the Boston Public Library. He pursued authenticity in the mural cycle’s design, and he conducted exhaustive research, traveling throughout the Middle East to find subjects that resonated with the work’s religious themes.
Sargent was likely traveling through Syria or the Jordan Valley when he first encountered the nomadic Bedouin people. Bedouin Chief depicts a young man in a squatting position, his bare arms folded across his knees. His body occupies most of the composition and he looks out from the canvas with self-assuredness. It has been suggested that this man’s attire and self-presentation may indicate his status as a camel owner, the lead driver of a camel train, or the son of a Bedouin chief.
