About the Artwork

Kitagawa Utamaro, Wife of a Virtuous Man, from the series Ten Beautiful Faces, ca. 1797-1800
Color woodcut with gray background, 13 x 8 7/8 in. (33 x 22.5 cm). Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Gift of Miss Carlotta Mabury, 54755.201

Utamaro was one of ukiyo-e's greatest print designers. His innovation in depicting his main subjects, the beautiful women of Edo and courtesans of the Yoshiwara district, distinguishes his work. After 1790 he began producing half- and three-quarter-length portraits of women with finely detailed hairstyles, kimonos, and accessories. These were soon followed by the "large head" portraits, which often bear inscriptions describing the identity of the sitter or her classification as a beautiful type or physiognomic category.
